Mr H Goes To Dalmeny – the story of Edward Robinson Jnr.
At some point after my Grandparents, Edward Robinson and Elizabeth Muir got married in November 1916, they moved to Queensferry. It’s 40 years too late for asking the wheres and the whyfors now, although as my Mum always said that her mothers family had reckoned she married beneath her, and that there was little contact thereafter. With my Grandad being a cobbler, and his new father-in-law running a very successful cobblers business, it may have seemed wise to leave Edinburgh. There is also the strong possibilty that their first child was born out of wedlock.
So by 1917, they were in Queensferry, where my Gran gave birth to their second child.
Edward William Robert Robinson Birth 30 AUG 1917 in Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland
Sadly, his was not to be a long and healthy life, as he died of rickets aged 5 months.
Death 20 FEB 1918 in Bellstane, Queenferry, West Lothian
For some reason, he wasn’t buried in Queensferry, but up the road in Dalmeny. Odder still, as my Gran was a Catholic and all her subsequent children were baptised. Even odder as there is a Catholic church in South Queensferry – St Margarets. Their records show that in 1912 Father Farquhar was made a Canon and that in 1918 Father Patrick J Rice took over as Parish Priest.
Here is the death certificate;
And here is the deed for the lair in Dalmeny Cemetery. Lair number 14, purchased for the sum of One Pound on the 20th February 1918, the date of young Edwards death;
They stayed a wee while longer, as their next child – Evelyn Elizabeth Sarah Grace Robinson was born on 30 Dec 1918 in Queensferry, but by the time child #4 arrived in 1920, they were in East Arthur Street in Dumbiedykes, before they ended up in Leith.
In Queensferry they lived at 15 Bell Stane, which is the lane pictured below, betwen the chippy and the Indian.
